Eight Bells Toll for Larry Monteith
Charleston / Mt. Pleasant, SC (January 16, 2026) — Charleston Race Week at Patriot’s Point is built by a community of dedicated volunteers, and among them was Larry Monteith—someone whose impact was felt throughout the event, even when his work happened quietly behind the scenes.
We were recently saddened to learn of Larry’s passing. As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, it is important to recognize the role he played in Charleston Race Week for many years.
Larry was integral to our media and production efforts, handling audiovisual setup, projection, and video displays that kept the event running smoothly and racers entertained with scenes and action from earlier each day on the race course. When he wasn’t focused on technical logistics, he was capturing the spirit of Race Week through photography, delivering some of the most lively dockside and social images from recent years.
He also had a gift for connection, often walking the docks in the mornings to gather quick interviews and candid moments with competitors, many of whom spoke about how much Charleston Race Week at Patriot’s Point meant to them.
While it truly takes a village to make this event happen, Larry was one of those individuals whose generosity, dedication and creativity made a significant difference. Always ready to help and make things happen. He was 65 years young—far too soon.
In the sailing tradition, we honor him with eight bells.
Fair winds and following seas, Larry. You will always be part of the Charleston Race Week at Patriot’s Point family.
