Charleston, South Carolina (March 23, 2024) — This year promises to be an epic Charleston Race Week experience for the VX One fleet. The event responded to the fleet’s request to be moved farther out in the harbor away from the shallows so VX One racing will take place on the same course as the J70s and Melges 24s. Charleston, South Carolina (April 23, 2023) — At the end of the day, a regatta is all about the breeze and when the wind generously gave its all for the last race of Charleston Race Week 2023, it brought smiles to many faces and success across all fifteen fleets racing.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 22, 2023) — A day that started with dark skies and thunderstorms finally cleared well before noon but not without challenging times for both race committee and racers alike. The 186-strong Charleston Race Week fleet faced big forecast challenges today as early storms killed the winds. The south-south-west sea breeze stayed pinned to the coast and offshore, making for lighter westerlies farther inside the harbor.

What made Friday’s racing particularly challenging were the significant shifts that, in combination with the always powerful current, kept skippers and tacticians on their toes.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 29, 2022) — Race Day 1 of Charleston Race Week got off to a rousing start with ideal conditions delivering an action-packed opening day. Southeasterly winds ranging from 6 to 11 knots enabled organizers to complete four races for all of the inshore courses. Meanwhile, offshore race committee chairmen Bruce Bingman and Ray Redness were able to give all the pursuit classes relatively long races.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 28, 2022) — There was a whirlwind of activity on the docks of Charleston Harbor Marina and Resort on Thursday morning. Some crew members were hauling sail bags while others were busily rigging sailboats. Race committee members were carrying flags and pulling dock carts filled with buoys. Across the Cooper River, smaller boats such as the Melges 24 and VX One were being launched in assembly line fashion.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 22, 2017) — For a second straight day, Charleston Harbor and the open ocean just offshore provided near-perfect conditions for over 200 competing teams at Sperry Charleston Race Week 2017. Boats across all six courses faced brisk southerly winds of 15-20 knots, while the offshore boats saw five-foot waves and big gusts on the second day of the biggest multiclass keelboat regatta in the Americas.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 21, 2017) — It was a tale of two mornings for the more than 200 boats taking to the water today for the opening day of 2017 Sperry Charleston Race Week. Over 150 inshore boats on four circles inside Charleston’s world-famous harbor faced hot temperatures, flat water, and sedate wind of 4-6 knots on their first race. In the meantime, the 46 offshore and Pursuit class boats were battling steep, short seas of 3-5 feet offshore in a solid 12-16 knots of Southerly wind – perfect sailing conditions for the larger boats sailing outside the shelter of Charleston’s breakwater.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 20, 2017) — Sperry Charleston Race Week  2017 will start tomorrow morning, and everyone – from competitors, to VIPS and sponsors to fans and locals – is pumped that there's a perfect spring forecast for the 22nd edition of the biggest multiclass keelboat regatta in the Americas. With three days of 80+ degree weather, no rain, and reliable southerly breeze on tap for 16 classes of race boats, the cream should rise to the top when Sunday’s winners are announced.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 11, 2017) — Now in its 22nd year, Sperry Charleston Race Week has evolved to become a mecca for trailerable one-design sailboats from across the country. Along with the J/70 Class, event organizers are expecting a significant turnout among the Melges 24, VX One Design, J/24 classes in particular. And several other one-design classes are expected to produce strong numbers as well. In all, 230 boats have registered to compete.

Perennial favorites and past champions battled adversity to rise to the top once again, while new faces joined the podium in several classes.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 16, 2016) — Friday’s wintery conditions were barely a memory after today’s picture-perfect Day 2 at Sperry Charleston Race Week, with 15-20 knots of wind inshore and over 20 outside the jetties. The conditions allowed for racing across all the courses at the spring’s premier event despite seas that ranged from ‘bumpy’ to ‘scary’ according to crews returning from the offshore race course.

Charleston, South Carolina (April 15, 2016) — Morning came on like a winter blast today, with cold, driving rain and a brisk northeasterly breeze greeting the more than 2,000 sailors competing this weekend in Sperry Charleston Race Week. With dangerous surf at the harbor’s edge and a building wind forecast, all offshore racing was canceled before 8:00 a.m  Event Director Randy Draftz said that while he hated to see the big boats lose a day, it wasn’t a difficult call.
