Sail To Shelter x CRW Sail Drive: A 30th Anniversary Initiative with Purpose
Charleston/Mt. Pleasant, SC (2026 April 6) - Set against the backdrop of one of the most dynamic and visually striking harbors in the country, and anchored by Regatta Headquarters aboard the historic USS Yorktown, Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point has built its reputation on delivering an experience that goes well beyond the racecourse. For 30 years, under the direction of Executive Director Randy Draftz and a team committed to constant evolution, it has never stood still—always finding new ways to elevate, refine, and reimagine what a regatta can and should be.
As a long-standing participant in the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas program, Race Week has also remained committed to sustainability and responsible event practices, continually seeking opportunities to reduce environmental impact while enhancing the overall regatta experience.
That spirit of innovation shows up in the details. And one of the most anticipated details each year? The skipper bag.
Over the years, these have taken on a life of their own, ranging from traditional gear bags to unexpected, conversation-starters. It’s a small but defining touchpoint, a signal that Race Week doesn’t just follow tradition, it strives to reinvent it every year.
In 2026, as the regatta celebrates its 30th anniversary, that tradition takes on a deeper meaning.
Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point is proud to partner with Sail To Shelter, an organization dedicated to transforming retired sails into purposeful, reusable products. Every registered team will receive a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted skipper bag this year, made from repurposed sailcloth/material. No two are exactly the same. Each carries its own history—wind-filled miles, hard-fought races, and time spent on the water, given new life and made into something entirely new.
It’s a fitting evolution for a milestone year. Not just a commemorative item, but a statement.
Throughout the regatta, competitors are invited to drop off retired sails dockside each day of the event. Instead of ending up in a landfill, these high-performance materials will be repurposed locally into durable reusable bags.
The sails collected will be transformed right here in Charleston into bags used by local food distribution programs, helping transport groceries and essential goods to families throughout the community.
At the center of this initiative is Sail To Shelter founder Angela Abshier, whose work has become a leading example of how sustainability and sailing can intersect in meaningful ways. Her mission addresses a growing challenge within the sport: modern sails, built from advanced composite materials, are incredibly durable, but notoriously difficult to recycle. Too often, they end up in landfills. Sail To Shelter offers a different path, one that extends the life of those materials while creating products that serve a greater purpose.
Angela will be on-site throughout Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point in the Regatta Village, giving competitors and attendees the opportunity to connect directly with that mission. Sailors will not only receive their custom skipper bags, but also have the chance to explore additional products, learn about the repurposing process, and engage with the story behind the work. Her presence adds a personal dimension to the initiative, one that underscores both craftsmanship and impact.
In recognition of her leadership and influence, Angela was named a 2025 honouree by The Honours, an acknowledgment of her role in shaping a more sustainable and purpose-driven future within the yachting community.
But the impact of this partnership doesn’t stop at the registration desk.
SAIL TO SHELTER x CRW SAIL DRIVE
In conjunction with Sail To Shelter, Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point is launching the inaugural Sail To Shelter x CRW Sail Drive, an effort designed to give retired sails a second life while directly supporting the local Charleston community. Throughout the regatta, sailors are invited to bring retired sails, whether they’re racing or simply part of the broader sailing community, and drop them off dockside each day.
Those sails won’t go to waste. They will be repurposed locally into durable, reusable bags that will serve a critical role beyond Race Week.
Through a partnership with Carolina Ocean Alliance, those bags will be distributed through local food programs, helping transport groceries and essential goods to families throughout the region. It’s a powerful full-circle moment, materials once used in competition returning to the community in a completely new form, carrying purpose.
The Sail Drive is intentionally simple. No complicated process, no barriers to entry—just an open invitation to participate. Bring a sail. Drop it off. Be part of something bigger.
And in a year where Sail To Shelter has already contributed more than 200 custom skipper bags to Race Week, that invitation carries weight. It reflects a partnership built not just on product, but on shared values: innovation, sustainability, and community engagement.
This is what Charleston Race Week at Patriot Point has always done best. It layers experience with intention. It takes the expected and pushes it further.
Thirty years in, Race Week continues to prove that being “unlike any other” isn’t just about where you race or what you see, it’s about how you evolve, how you engage, and how you give back.
In 2026, that evolution is tangible. It’s in the bags competitors carry. It’s in the sails they leave behind. And it’s in the impact those materials will have long after the final race is sailed.
