Race Day Two Highlights
Midday report from the water
Instead of the steady sea breeze we were looking forward to, the inshore courses have been racing through very inconsistent south/south-westerly winds with lulls as low as 8 knots and gusts reading as high as 17-18 knots.
The Pursuit and offshore courses saw an average of 6 knots with puffs nearing 10 knots.
The Pursuit classes have finished their race for the day, and results are streaming in from the water.
Saturday April 30 - Race Day Two
Good morning and welcome to Race Day 2 of Charleston Race Week! Seems the sailors enjoyed themselves at last night’s beach party - the docks are awfully slow this morning.
After being heckled by the light air/strong current combo yesterday, sailors will be relieved to hit the race course this morning with a little more pressure and the promise of a stable sea breeze.
Today’s racing schedule is as follows:
0930 First Warning for 1st boat in Pursuit Class, subsequent starts to follow
Pursuit Class Circle 6 Course Assignments for today:
Pursuit Non-Spinnaker - Course 1E
Pursuit Performance, Spinnaker A, & Spinnaker B - Course 3
1100 First Warning - Inshore (Circles 1, 2, 3)
1100 First Warning - Offshore (Circle 5)
1400 First Warning - 69F (Tentative)

Action Packed Opening Day at 2022 Charleston Race Week
Race Day 1 of Charleston Race Week got off to a rousing start with ideal conditions delivering an action-packed opening day. Southeasterly winds ranging from 6 to 11 knots enabled organizers to complete four races for all of the inshore courses. Meanwhile, offshore race committee chairmen Bruce Bingman and Ray Redness were able to give all the pursuit classes relatively long races.
Melges 24 Class - "It was a typical Charleston type of day, and the racing was wonderful," Melges 24 skipper Travis Weisleder said. "We had solid breeze, tricky current and competitive racing. It was definitely a fun time out there on the water."
Of course, Weisleder had every reason to be happy after winning all four races in Melges 24 class. The Richmond, Virginia resident is seeking his third straight Charleston Race Week win and is certainly off to a good start.
Veteran professional Mark Mendelblatt is serving as tactician Weisleder's aboard Lucky Dog, which has taken an early eight-point lead on. John Bowden, who has been racing with Weisleder for more than a decade, is trimming the headsails.
