Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point

Shannon Lockwood ThumbnailDo you know Shannon Lockwood? If you race in the J/80 Class on the East Coast, chances are you do. She and her dad Bill have been campaigning their boat Shenanigans pretty consistently since 2008. And Bill has been on the racing scene for roughly 40 years. (Longtime racers will remember him from his J/35 and Mumm 30 days on board Instigator.)

Shannon grew up sailing. She says her mom and dad included all five Lockwood siblings on sailing vacations in the British Virgin Islands and local regattas around the New Jersey coast. She also came up through the junior program at Keyport Yacht Club racing Optis. After that, Shannon went on to sail for collegiate powerhouse St. Mary’s College in Maryland. That’s about when the Lockwoods bought their J/80.

“We really like the J/80 class because it offers a great combination of camaraderie and competition,” Shannon says. “And, just like you find in a lot of different boat classes, we’ve developed very good friendships with many people in the class.”

At CRW, Shannon will be driving with her dad doing the mainsail trim. Regular crewmembers Jeff Todd (trim and tactics) and Koralina McKenna (mast and bow) will also be on board Shenanigans. These four have raced together at several regattas.

Regarding her first time competing in Charleston, Shannon says: “We are looking forward to it because we have heard great things from other J/80 competitors about the sailing conditions, the race management and the parties! This year, we considered going to Key West, but the J/80 turnout was too small, so we opted for Charleston instead. We're looking forward to our first one-design gathering of the year.”
