South Carolina Maritime Foundation
The South Carolina Maritime Foundation was founded as a public nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in August 2000 by a group with passionate maritime interests. The Foundation launched the Spirit of South Carolina tall ship in 2007 and began serving students and teachers with state standards-based educational programs. In addition to owning and operating the sailing school vessel the Spirit of South Carolina, the Foundation publishes South Carolina Voyage and hosts major maritime events to help fund these educational programs, including Charleston Harbor Fest, Spirit Ball, Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament, Charleston to Bermuda Race, Spirit Night local partnerships and more.
The Foundation’s mission is to create opportunities for life-changing experiences resulting in leaders for tomorrow’s communities. Since its first season of programming in 2007, over 6,000 students have been served, and the vessel operates throughout the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Canadian Maritimes.
Programs aboard the 140-foot schooner provide students with unparalleled, hands-on educational opportunities. While onboard, students stand watch, set sails, navigate and ultimately assume command of the ship while embarking on a journey of self discovery. Participants are fully immersed in all aspects of shipboard life while also engaged in formal learning curriculum.
