IT’S A WRAP. BIG WINDS CHASE SAILORS ASHORE FOLLOWED BY A ROLLICKING AWARDS CEREMONY
If the first day’s winds were “monster” (our own description), there really isn’t an appropriate superlative to describe what happened on the final day of Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week this year. Rapidly increasing winds and huge seas offshore (8 feet at the mouth of Charleston Harbor) prompted the principal race officers to cancel all competition offshore, then later, the same thing happened inshore. The intrepid competitors in the Pursuit Class did get in a race, and then it was a wrap – another successful (if foreshortened) edition of Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week.
